Dylan

Dylan ~ Son of the Sea ~ Welsh

Trends & American Use
It's hard not to think of Bob Dylan when I first hear this name, and while some parents will love that, others won't. Those that aren't particularly Bob-Dylan-fanatics are taking this name back from the realm of enduring 60s folk, giving it not only a trendy feel that has nothing to do with the artist, but a bit of an Irish association that goes back to its roots.

The name has a past grounded in Welsh mythology, and parents have been using it for a long time, even in the United States. That was helped along not only by Bob Dylan, but by the famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, whose verses became well known and honored throughout the world, especially "Do not go gentle into that good night." Thomas' poetry readings in the U.S. were quite famous and well-attended, but only lasted three years, ending with his death in 1953.

The baby name Dylan first showed up on Social Security statistics in 1966, and it's been a strong choice since. While it did hit a peak in 2004, it is still an on-trend choice and one that will be well-liked by most who hear it. If you like trendy names that have strong roots, look no further.

  1. I used to love Dylan for a girl, after watching children of men. Recently my friend had a boy Dylan but have gone off the name now in favour of classic handsomes such as Edward, Henry & Oswald.

  2. This is another name that I find way too masculine on a girl.
