Liam

Liam ~ Warrior, Protector ~ Irish origins

Stylishly Irish
This name may look like it was created from the last four letters of the name William, but it is distinctively different. Liam comes from the Irish variation Uilliam, and it has a strong Celtic feel. In fact, if you think about famous figures named Liam, you'll notice a strong trend: most have Irish roots. There's the Irish actor Liam Neesen for one. The author Liam O'Flaherty was Irish, just like you might guess from his name. Even the child actor Liam Aiken was born to a mother who immigrated from Ireland.

But don't worry if you love this name for its sound but don't have any Irish connections. There aren't any rules to naming your child, and after all, this is America, the world's melting pot. I am honestly surprised it took the U.S. so long to catch up with England, Ireland, and Scotland in terms of its popularity.

Popularity
Today (in 2014), Liam is the #2 boys' name in the country! Americans love the sweet sound of this name, and we may not stop until it's #1.
  • Tori Spelling named her son Liam, born in 2007.
  • Characters named Liam appeared on Veronica Mars, Lost & The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
