Spring 2015
Top Stereotypical Celebrity Name
Names that give celebs a reputation for using wild or odd names.
Australian power couple Sam Worthington, actor best known for the lead in Avatar, and his wife, model Lara Bingle, went bold with their baby's name. Very bold. It's the kind of name I picture on a friendly cartoon alien designed by Disney. The combination of the first and middle name is what puts this one over the edge for me, into the realm of, well, outer space. There were 13 boys given the name Rocket last year, so maybe I just need to broaden my horizons...I crack myself up.
WINNER: Rocket Zot
Top Trendy Names
Names that are becoming a hit with celebs and not-so-famous parents alike.
WINNERS: Scarlett, Grayson
Most Classic Name
Classic names that no one pays attention to because they aren't wild enough.
Funny story. Usually finding a classic name is very easy—I simply look for names that have the most consistent use over time. This season, there are a few that may feel like classics but are actually closer to what I'd describe as trendy or a period-revival name...in short, there's not a classic name in sight.
WINNERS: Traditional names Theodore and Tobias are as close as it comes!
Best Intriguing Name
A name that is a little surprising, in a nice way.
The Scandinavian form of Andrew, Anders has a trend-worthy sound even though it's just barely begun to get some attention. It may be rare, but it's not unfamiliar, making it a pleasant little surprise.
WINNER: Anders
Newest Celebrity Trend
An interesting trend showing up in this season's names, whether or not it's a trend on a large scale.
This season happens to highlight traditionally male-leaning names in the girls' section.
WINNERS: Dashiel, Logan, Kingsley, Wilder, Ryan, August, Andy
Honorable Mention: girls' middle names James, Corbin, and Carter
Personal Favorite
My own choice for best names. What's yours?
WINNER: Theodore Vigo Sullivan

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge
It's official! The Princess is here and her name is perfection. She's fourth in line to the throne and officially bears three names: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Let's break those three beautiful names down, shall we?
Princess Charlotte's first name is in honor of her grandfather Charles, the Prince of Wales. It's the perfect way to honor him, it's elegant, darling, royal, and English (by way of French). Go back in time with me to my original feature post on this name:
The name Charlotte, a feminine form of the name Charles, gained fame in England after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, brought the name to royal status. Queen Charlotte was a patron of the arts and supported both Bach, who was also her music teacher, and Mozart, who dedicated an opus to her. She was known for her art exhibitions and humanitarian efforts, and her name became a very attractive choice among parents in Great Britain and across Europe. In America, a city was named after her, and Charlotte is now the largest city in North Carolina. Her middle name, Elizabeth, is in honor of the Queen, Elizabeth II, the princess' great-grandmother. Elizabeth is also in honor of Kate's mother, Carole Elizabeth, who passed her middle name on to Kate as well. Using Elizabeth is a sweet family tradition for Kate, and she must have been proud to pass it on to her daughter. Here's a little more info from my original post on this name:
Quite possibly the most classic female name of all time, Elizabeth has an impressive history with thousands of years of renown. It was the name of at least 14 different European queens, including the current Queen of England. It was the name of John the Baptist's mother in the Bible. It has represented princesses, empresses, and saints. The princess' second middle name, Diana, is in honor of her late grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales. It's a name from ancient Roman mythology as the goddess of the moon and of hunting. Because she was also known to be the virgin goddess of women and childbirth, poets would use the goddess Diana in reference to the virgin Queen, Elizabeth I.
Popularity
In England, this name will be very well received. Even though new name stats are due out this week, I can say with confidence that in the US, we are all enamored with the Princess' full name as well.
The name Charlotte is currently ranked at #11 and is rising in popularity.
The name Elizabeth is currently ranked at #10 and is holding steady in popularity.
The name Diana is currently ranked at #270 and is falling in popularity.
This is quite a bit different than the impression the name George left on us. The Princess' name is likely going to be a top 10 name in the US once new stats are revealed for 2014. It's very popular, and it will strike people as beautiful and classic.
All three of the Princess' names are honor names. They are very sentimental, and while Diana in particular may be the least popular, it's probably the most touching. It doesn't take a name expert to declare that this little Princess' name is a big hit, and exactly the kind of name we were all hoping for.

Winter 2015
It would be cheating to include the birth of daughter Poppy to the Brent-Berkus family, but that name definitely grabbed my attention! I recently included Poppy in a list of unusual floral names for girls written for Baby Name Wizard. I'll have more on Poppy for my Spring 2015 post.
I was also a little too late to mention Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's daughter Delta, though you can read the funny story of their name choice here. (Or was I?) Now, on to the awards!

George
George ~ Farmer ~ Greek
His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge
After waiting two days for the Duke and Duchess to decide on a name and make an announcement, many of us are delighted, but not surprised, to hear of the Prince's given names. Here's why George is so perfect for the little prince.
George is a royal name with a rich history. It has strong familial ties to the House of Windsor, as King George V founded it in 1917. It is one of the middle names of Prince Charles, and the chosen name of the Queen's father, King George VI. At the time of Prince George's birth, there were no living royal relatives with his first name, creating the perfect opportunity. This will make the little prince the seventh English king to be called George if he choses to keep his name upon ascending the throne someday.
Did the Duke and Duchess Choose Wisely?
I had to laugh when I saw the headline from TMZ calling the name "A BIG MISS". While some Americans will likely think that George isn't as fashionable as some of the other traditional choices, it's classy, elegant, royal, and exceedingly British. My answer is a resounding yes!
History
Here's why George is so worthy of an English king. It's the name of the patron saint of England (since the 14th century). This is the saint who is said to have slain a dragon to rescue a maiden, and it still carries a very heroic and romantic air because of that. St. George is appropriately the patron saint of knights, which is why English knights used to cry "By George!" as they were charging into battle. It's an ancient name, a very British name, and a very royal name. In fact, the list of monarchs named George throughout history is so long, I prefer not to list them here.
Popularity
In the US, the popularity of the name has been waning. It's at an all-time low, sitting at #166 out of the top 1,000 names in the country. It was a top-10 name until 1938 and has been steadily but slowly dropping in use. Today's American parents may associate George with people who are one generation older than they are. This makes George feel more like a name our dad may have instead of a fashionably antique name. (And those antique names are more fashionable if they took a dive in popularity in the past 50-100 years. George remained pretty popular during that time.) However, I could see parents in the US reconsidering in light of the royal baby. I do expect George to see a bump in use for babies born in the year 2013.
In the UK, George is very popular. In England and Wales, it was in the top 10 names until 2011, but it only fell to #12. George will definitely gain favor once again as many British parents seek to emulate royalty and honor the new prince by naming their sons after him. Duchess Catherine has definitely proven her ability to influence trends, and her taste in names will be no exception.

Name Your Baby Like Brad & Angelina
So, how'd they do it? Let's take a look at their kids' names and the qualities they have.
- Maddox Chivan - Maddox comes from a Welsh surname and means son of Madoc. At the time of his adoption, the name Max was gaining popularity and Maddox seemed like a fresh twist on that name.
- Zahara Marley - Zahara is Arabic and means flower. It's also one letter away from the familiar Sahara desert. It's a pretty international name, with the z making it seem a bit exotic.
- Shiloh Nouvel - Shiloh is Hebrew, means he who is to be sent, and is a Biblical place name.
- Pax Thien - This is a Latin name meaning peace. It's short, sweet, and catchy.
- Knox Leon - Knox is English and means hills. It's a common surname, a college, a Fort, and much more.
- Vivienne Marcheline - Vivienne is the French form of a Latin name meaning full of life. It's a softer variation of Vivian, updating it for today and making the cute nicknames Viv and Vivi more appealing.
Baby Naming Tips Inspired by Brad & Angelina
Like Brangelina's choices? Here's how you can create your own style of trend-setting names that will make you feel like a celebrity.
- Use names that contain an x or an unusual consonant for boys. All three Jolie-Pitt boys—Maddox, Pax, and Knox—have this in common. It's a trend that's still going strong, with names like Jaxon really taking off recently. Another take on this trend is to go with a different consonant in the name that also looks and feels less-used, like q, z, or j.
- Look for girls' names with strong roots and lots of vowels to soften the sound. The Jolie-Pitt girls, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne, each have a unique personality but also roll off the tongue. They have origins in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin and are familiar to us. Another quality they share is a strong consonant to start off the name and similar repeating vowel sounds.
- Think about names that sound unusual but are familiar. Whether it's a surname like Maddox and Knox, a place-inspired name like Shiloh, a twist on a familiar name like Vivienne, or a classic Latin word like Pax, you'll be on target if the name has been around for awhile in one form or another.
- Don't be afraid to rock your style. If the name you love is almost unheard of among other parents, don't be shy. For example, using Knox as a first name was extremely unusual when the Jolie-Pitt baby was born. Today Knox is beginning to climb up the name charts.
Examples
Here are a few name ideas that feel like they could have come from power couple Brangelina. Have fun trying out a few of your own!
Inspired by Maddox, Pax, and Knox:
- Hendrix
- Felix
- Jax
- Maxim
Inspired by Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne:
- Samara
- Vienna
- Pascale
- Lailah

Names of Teen Stars
![]() | It seems like we've seen more young stars rise lately than ever before. The Disney Channel in particular has really cornered the market of pre-teens by finding teenagers with good looks who can often sing and dance in addition to act. These young stars have a strong following in tweens, but they also have the power to influence culture on a much grander scale. A little magic must be in place for a teen star to create a naming trend. The name must be somewhat unique, already fit with trends, and sound good to parents' ears, otherwise it won't go anywhere. |
Some great examples of this are the names Miley and Jonas. Miley can be solely attributed to the star Miley Cyrus (born Destiny Cyrus), which happened to come along at a time when names Kylie, Hayley, and Riley were already climbing the charts. The Jonas brothers contributed to the rise of the name Jonas, which was gaining some popularity before they hit the scene. This means that even though the Jonas brothers don't usually find fans in people of parenting age, their names, faces, and music find us everywhere. They permeate media and entertainment until even adults find themselves influenced by these young stars.
Most of the names below are already popular, like Emma and Dylan, so the addition of a teen star with the name only further cements the name's popularity.
