Kyler

Kyler ~ Church ~ Gaelic

Meaning
Sometimes a name comes into popularity at just the right time and from a variety of sources. Kyler is more trendy than Kyle, more unique than Tyler, and more masculine than Skyler. I think the name's true roots are in the organic process of parents creating a name from different sounds and existing names. So while I'd say Kyler is most likely to come from the combination of Kyle and Tyler, the name still has a meaning. In Scotland, Kyler is a surname meaning church.

Popularity
Creative and discerning parents really hit the mark with Kyler, which is cute and unique but not too unfamiliar. While other trendy names for boys seem to end in -an or -en, Kyler is just a little different. It first showed up on the a-list of baby names in 1986, when it was number 899. The name's popularity grew steadily and has been in the top 200s since 2001.

Kyler a unisex name, which means it could eventually be claimed more by girls than boys. But personally, it feels more like a boy's name to me. That's probably because I love the nickname Ky, which I have trouble imagining being used for a girl.
  • Kyler is #288 on the charts for 2014.
