We love the names the early settlers of the U.S. chose for their children. Wanting to break away from typical English saint's names but also proudly pass on their beliefs, virtue names were the perfect way for the Puritans to express themselves. These days, their choices are inspiring parents because of the sweet, comforting words and connotations.Celebrities are taking notice of these options as well. Meg Ryan named her daughter Daisy True; Jessica Alba chose Honor for her daughter (photo), and both Hope and Grace are common choices for a middle name among the famous. It also happens that the little girl Madonna is interested in adopting is named Chifundo, which means Mercy.
Below are names listed with rank (What is name rank?) following if the name is in the U.S. top 1,000 names. Virtue names are typically more suited for girls, but several are perfect for boys. In particular, Justice, Sincere, Loyal and Earnest lend themselves well as male names. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteMy 5th great grandmother was named experience, and her sister was named Freelove. I've seen a record of Freelove being nicknamed "Lovey" and have often wondered and hoped that Experience had an equally approachable nickname!
