The term "trinity" has existed since 325 A.D., when it was used to describe Christian doctrine concerning the Father, Son and Spirit. It took the creativity of a handful of parents in the 1970s, more than a thousand years later, for the word to become a name at all. Use of the name disappeared in the 80s, only to make a quiet, barely-there comeback in the 90s.
And then The Matrix hit theaters. Trinity was a big-screen warrior who fought for the freedom of mankind in patent black leather. She was known for her programming and battle skills, but we loved her for her emotional bravery. It was her kiss that revived Neo from death, leading to the eventual rescue of humanity. And almost as soon as audiences left the theater, little girls across America were born bearing the character's name.
Trinity is a beautiful word in its sound and its spiritual meaning, and it manages to carry both urban and ancient sensibilities at the same time. While it still has an obvious connection to The Matrix, the name has detached a bit from the movie due to the sheer amount of kids that are named Trinity. Instead of creating a fad, I think The Matrix sparked a lasting trend when it comes to the name. Though I am sure it will wax and wane, the spiritual and historical roots of the word have convinced me that parents will be using Trinity for generations to come.
