Campbell: A Name on the Rise

Campbell (KAM-bull) ~ Crooked Mouth ~ Gaelic

History

Before you get confused or concerned about the meaning I've assigned to this name, I want you to know that Campbell has two meanings associated with it!

Campbell's original Gaelic roots tell us the name comes from a descriptive nickname cam beul, meaning “wry or crooked mouth.”

Campbell is also transferred use of a Scottish surname, belonging to one of the Highland clans whose chief is the Duke of Argyll. The surname was historically represented in Latin as de bello campo, meaning “of the fair field.”

Both meanings have a place in the name's history, and you can choose your own inspiration if you wish. I happen to love them both, whether it's the stately homage to a clan associated with a beautiful field or a quirky nickname for a whiskered Scottish man, ready with a quip and a grin.

Popularity

Campbell is what we consider a unisex name, as it appears in use for both boys and girls. In the latest U.S. rankings, it sits at #764 for boys and #617 for girls.

But the trend is where things get interesting.

Campbell is on its way UP. That doesn't mean it's popular now, but interest in the name has definitely spiked. In fact, its latest rankings show a pretty dramatic jump for both boys and girls.

The numbers flesh out our story: In 2024, Campbell ranked #955 for girls and #922 for boys. By 2025, it had climbed to #617 for girls and #764 for boys. That's quite a leap for a name that still feels like an under-the-radar choice!

American Culture

Of course, the name Campbell is forever linked with soup. And I don't think that's a deterrent. I think it's a plus, because Campbell's has given us some of the coziest and sweetest commercials around.

If you're someone of my generation, your association might go something like this: name → soup → thawing snowman. I'm talking about this, of course.

Beyond that, Campbell brings to mind plenty of famous faces (see my list below), helping us look beyond the grocery aisles. It's a well-established Scottish surname. In fact, National Records of Scotland ranks it as the fifth most common surname in the country.

But what this name really has going for it is the sound. For parents wanting something a bit fresher than Cameron, Campbell is an attractive alternative. It has that same approachable, surname-as-a-first-name feel, but with a slightly different twist. And we love the nicknames we can create from this name!

Campbell has that lovely combination of versatility and familiarity. It's recognizable without being overused, and it works for both boys and girls. That's a pretty appealing combination!
