Living in the West has done a lot for my inner cowgirl. I love watching rodeos, and from the moment I attended one of the local competitions, I knew I'd have to write about the wonderfully western names I heard. After all, what could be a better place for western baby-name inspiration than a rodeo?
Yes—many of these are real cowboy and cowgirl names! My sources for this list include riders of the Colorado Pro Rodeo Association, the Wyoming Rodeo Association, and the Pro Bull Riders, Inc, as well a handful of my own ideas.
Cowgirls Andie Annie Belle Casey Cassidy Chelsea Cheyenne Dakota Dallas Darcy Ginger Jessie Kashley LeAnne Lexi (Alexis) Mary Jo Morgan Oakley Paisley Riley Ryan Sierra Tamalynn Tandy Taylor Wynonna | Cowboys Austin Bo Boone Chance Chase Clint Cody Colt Darnell Flint Hardy Jarrett Jesse Justin Lance Levi Maverick Ryder T.J. This is great, very interesting. I will refer my writing friends to this blog (it may help with character names).

ReplyDeleteyou just added me to twitter - and i checked out your site! FUN! I'm 17 weeks pregnant with our second - and we have NO idea what we're going to name our child. We'll find out next month if it's a boy or girl. Maybe we'll just ask the twitter audience for great names.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep checking back!

Denim is a good western name that is for either boy or girl.
ReplyDeleteNames are not just names; they play a role in providing the bearer personality and confidence.
ReplyDeleteNice baby name list. Thanks for the sharing.
ReplyDeleteI like these for girls
ReplyDeleteMae, Hillary, Miley, and Tori
And for guys
Riley, Dustin, and Troy or Ty.
I loe cowboy/cowgirl sounding names so I named my son Colt and my daughters Dallas and Ellie. If the next baby is a boy we plan to use Wiley which is a name that goes back several generations with my family.
ReplyDeleteI think that the best names for cowboy kids are names like Ranch, Colt, Rodeo, Storm, Buck, Aspen, Oakley, etc.
ReplyDeleteI named my son Honor, so he'd have a name to live up to. He has, and loves his name. Great for a boy or a girl. Can be western-y sounding, but isn't necessarily.
